As one its initiatives for the school year 2002-2003, the Ahuimanu School Ohana decided to pursue the construction of a Physical Fitness Center. The Ohana wanted a Physical Fitness Center that would provide the children of Ahuimanu Elementary School with age appropriate, safe, fun, and challenging outdoor fitness equipment that could be integrated into the school's physical education curriculum and achieve the following goals.
1. Promote general physical fitness of the students.
2. Provide opportunities for children to meet the Physical Education Standards and "to actualize a vision of themselves as competent movers with the skills, knowledge, and desire to become lifelong participants in physical activities" (State of Hawaii Department of Education, "Physical Education Content Standards," RS00-0091, August 1999).
3. Provide opportunities for children to work on Ahuimanu General Student Outcomes as Complex Thinkers, Collaborative Workers, Self-directed Learners, Community Contributors, Quality Producers, and Effective Communicators.
The Ahuimanu Ohana worked with and coordinated with the Administration, SCBM Council, Teachers, Custodial Staff, the Department of Education, and the Student Council Representatives. The Student Council Representatives were involved in review of the equipment selection and choosing the color scheme for the equipment. Funds for the construction of the Physical Fitness Center are currently being raised through the Ahuimanu School's Wog-a-thon, Pennies for Playground, and Spring fundraiser.
