AHUIMANU OHANA BOARD MEETING
April 20th, 2004

Yvonne Turro, Robert Maeshiro, James Garrett, Kahea Souza, Wayne Iseri, Bob Lockyer, Kendra Sevigny, Linda Kinoshita, Leighton Sakamoto

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:25 p.m.

Approval of Minutes
The minutes of March 9, 2004 was not available.

Treasurer’s Report
March 2004 report was distributed and reviewed by Wayne (see attached). It was moved by Linda and seconded by Yvonne that the treasurer's report be approved. Motion was unanimously approved.

President’s Report
None.

Vice President’s Report
Yvonne announced that Lee Hopkinson will not be able to assume president's position for next year. Valsey Frietas has expressed interest and has been entered into the records as a candidate for ohana president.

Status of other elected positions are: Yvonne will be running for vice-president, Wayne for treasurer, Robert for recording secretary. A write-in nomination was made by Jennifer Martin nominating Nalani Fernandez as a candidate for corresponding secretary.

James volunteered for another year to head communications.

Yvonne and Lee will be attending a fundraiser represenatives' meeting at the Treetops Restaurant next Tuesday, April 27th.


Committee Reports:

a. Shirts
Yvonne presented the many creative and artistic designs that were submitted by students for the school's t-shirt contest. Bob suggested that the t-shirt should portray something about the school's character or what Ahuimanu Elementary School stands for.


b. SCBM
None.


c. Workshop
Kendra reported that the Science Fair held on Friday, April 16, 2004 was very organized, well planned and run by Valsey. The fair was a big success and well attended by over 120 people.


d. Membership
Kendra suggested that to encourage more parental involvement, a new parent night be held again when the new kindergarten class comes in.


e. Student Council
Student Council is planning for Earth Day.

Monies for Math flyer went out to provide information on efforts to raise funds for the math books.


f. PCNC
Linda announced that Parent Sub Day is coming up for K-2 grades on May 5th. Parent Sub Day for upper grades will be announced at a later time.


g. Fun Fair
Ailyn Lum will not be able to chair the fun fair for next year. Ohana will be approaching other promising prospects for the position.


h. Fall Fundraiser
None


i. Spring Fund Raiser
Kahea announced that planning for next year's event is going well. She displayed the Wog-A-Thon t-shirt design that she created. Assisting at this year's event among the many volunteers will be the Marines. Area businesses will be solicited for donations of prizes. Bob encouraged anyone with knowledge of possible donors to give information to Kahea. Actual running route was discussed.


j. Playground
David submitted an email report: Community group "96744" will be taking over maintenance of the middle playground in May 04. Their first work day will be on May 1, 2004. He wrote to the yard person who has been cutting the grass that his services will no longer be needed.

Tether ball poles: David met with Eagle Scout candidate on March 21, 2003 to discuss his eagle scout project. He needed to get project approved by his troop. David has not heard back from the Eagle Scout yet.

Linda presented a concern that walkway to playground is often very muddy. Problem needs to be addressed.


k. Faculty
Linda announced that the new basketball hoops came in and May Day planning is in full swing.

Leighton reported that a decision has been made for Harcourt School Publishing to provide the new math books. The choice was unanimous and math books will servicing grades K-6th. Costs of the books were estimated at $xx,xxx.


l. Administration
Bob announced that the school is considering purchasing a new copier machine. Discussion centered around present lease agreement vs. purchasing a replacement copier.

Teacher Appreciation Week will be the first week in May and Secretary Week is currently underway.

Wayne said ohana will be contributing to Secretary Week.

Parent Tea is coming soon to show appreciation for parents that volunteer for school activities.


m. Communications
James shared that Bob provided a tripod for him to use for May Day picture taking. James is planning to attend the May Day rehearsal to determine proper logistics for May Day filming.


Request for Funds
None.

New Business/Parent Concerns
Parent's concern was raised that sometimes the cafeteria runs out of food at lunchtime. Bob said sometimes mistakes are made, but more often than not there is extra food left over. If a problem occurs, it is due to driver not bringing enough. What happens then is that students are given an extra recess until more food can be delivered and provided to students that same day.


Adjournment/Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the library.

The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
