AHUIMANU OHANA PTA BOARD MEETING MINUTES April 18, 2006
Present
Yvonne Turro, Robert Maeshiro, Anne Marie Duca, Julie Aoyagi, Steve Jenkins, James Garrett, Brian Ferguson and Kailani Fano.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:19 p.m.
Approval of Minutes
Anne Marie requested the minutes to be corrected. Under "Administration," HSAT test is changed to "HSA & SAT" tests. James moved and Steve seconded that the March 15, 2006 minutes are approved as corrected. Motion was carried unanimously.
Treasurer's Report
None.
President's Report
Yvonne mentioned PTSA is proposing a fee increase. Dues are projected to rise from $5.00 to $10.00 per member. Members are encouraged to share their feedback on this rate hike proposal.
Vendors will be presenting their fundraising programs at the June Ohana meeting. There was discussion of limiting the number of presenters. It was agreed that the number of vendors should be limited to 5. Each vendor will be allowed 10 minutes for his or her presentation.
Yvonne shared that no nomination papers have been returned. Anne Marie suggested that the Ohana nomination deadline be extended another week and papers be sent out again.
Vice President's Report
Yvonne reported that Valsey would be stepping down from Vice President next year to take over the Wog-A-Thon fundraiser.
Committee Reports
a. Shirts
None.
b. SCC
Brian mentioned that the Parent Survey has been sent home. The survey is providing information to parents about Ahuimanu. It is also requesting ideas from parents on how to increase parental involvement.
Christine Hartley is the newly elected Parent Representative.
c. Workshop
Kailani announced that May 9th is the Summer Learning -"Prep for Summer" workshop.
Kindergarten through 6th grade Math Focused Workshop is also scheduled for May 9th.
Dark Side of the Internet workshop is being scheduled for two showings. Definitely no children allowed. Presentation for teachers will be held on May 10th. Presentation for parents will be held on May 24th. Kaaawa, Waiahole, and Kahaluu Elementary Schools have also been invited. Permission has been given to remove Internet blocks at Ahuimanu so the workshop can proceed.
Membership
None.
d. Student Council
Student Council held an informational meeting for students interested in running for office.
The council races are open to all students.
e. PCNC
None.
g. Fun Fair
Ohana to follow up if all outstanding Fun Fair bills had been paid.
f. Fall Fundraiser
None.
i. Spring Fundraiser
Wog-A-Thon planning is in full swing. Anne Marie mentioned that we're having difficulty getting help from the military. Our troops from Bravo Company have returned to duty in Iraq. The men and women from the Marimeds are still scheduled to help.
j. Faculty
Steve thanked the Ohana for the very generous donation that was made for the 6th grade Kauai trip.
He also thanked the Ohana for the May Day donation. It will be used to purchase new Kahilis for the school. The old Kahilis are being retired after 25 years.
Physical Education Day was held April 18, 2006. The program went very well and was enjoyed by all.
He also expressed much mahalo for the faculty laptops. Progress is going very well.
k. Administration
Anne Marie reported:
Faculty and Custodian Appreciation Days are coming up. She is soliciting ideas for gifts.
$100.00 was used for the Kindergarten Take Home Packets.
Mr. Ellis is sending out a survey regarding Conflict Resolution.
Ahuimanu has been approached to participate in a psychological survey. Students will receive treats for participating. The school will receive $1.00 for every student participant. The survey will attempt to determine various benchmarks that can latter be used to rate other students.
The next school year begins July 31, 2006. The first day for teachers is July 25th.
Teacher Workday is scheduled for January 11, 2007.
Enrichment Day is being planned for January 12, 2007.
March 13th - Mrs. Almony's 6th grade GT class participated in Olelo'sYouth Exchange Network Competition. Ahuimanu's students entered two videos. One of the videos took First Place honors. The videos will be aired on Olelo: April 20, 22, and 29.
Kindergarten Open House is scheduled for May 9th.
In order to support a balanced literacy program, standards based resources may all be purchased from the same vendor. Representatives from various companies have visited Ahuimanu several weeks ago.
Language Arts Program - teachers are looking to make good choices.
Lobby your legislators. A bill limiting the 3rd grade class sizes is still alive.
May Day is set for May 19th.
6th Grade Graduation: June 2 - Ahuimanu Cafeteria.
L. Communications
James requested help with the wording of the brochures he made up for the SCC.
Website had an unusually large amount of visitors last month.
Someone from North Carolina also wanted to apply for a job at Ahuimanu.
He also expressed interest on taking on the Membership Committee responsibilities in addition to maintaining the website.
James will also be working again on a May Day and 6th Grade Kauai Trip DVD.

The next official meeting is Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 6 p.m. in the library. The meeting was adjourned at 7:46 p.m.
