AHUIMANU OHANA PTA BOARD MEETING MINUTES February 15, 2006
Present
Valzey Frietas, Robert Maeshiro, Anne Marie Duca, Lois Upton, Julie Aoyagi, James Garrett, and Steve Jenkins.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:18 p.m.
Approval of Minutes
James moved and Lois seconded that the January 18, 2006 minutes be approved. Motion was carried unanimously.
Treasurer's Report
Julie shared report as of January 31, 2006.
President's Report
None.
Vice President's Report
Valzey presided over the meeting. She shared items that Yvonne wanted to cover:
Elections - She asked for a show of hands of members that will be seeking re-election.
Robert & Julie will not be seeking re-election.
PTSA - There will be a PTSA Conference at the Prince Kuhio Hotel on February 22 & 23. Ohana will be footing the cost for any member who would like to attend. Members can choose to attend some or all sessions.
PTSA Membership Cards - Yvonne still has membership cards at home. If anyone has a laser printer, they could be done on it. If not, they'll need to be typed out.
Committee Reports
a. Shirts
None.
b. SCC
Lois mentioned that she, Brian, and Carla are preparing the ballots for the election to the seat Carla currently holds.
Parent survey will be held to determine how to get more parental involvement.
Castle Complex received $6,000.00 (six thousand dollars) for their SCC committees. Of that amount, the Ahuimanu SCC will receive approximately $600. The Ahuimanu SCC plans to use the money to create a brochure about the school, which will be given to prospective parents when they visit the school.
The next SCC meeting is Tuesday, February 21.
c. Workshop
Anne Marie shared that Science Night was a tremendous success. Everyone really enjoyed the program. She also mentioned that the "Brain Gym Workshop" would be held Thursday, February 23.
She suggested that a workshop covering fundraisings that are held during the year would helpful in educating parents as to our fundraising needs.
d. Membership
None.
e. Student Council
Student Council completed the selection of next year's school planners. Anne Marie was thrilled that for once the council chose a planner she personally favored.
f. PCNC
None.
g. Fun Fair
Julie to check with Wayne if all invoices have been paid.
g. Fall Fundraiser
None.
i. Spring Fundraiser
Kahea set Wog-a-Thon date at April 28, 2006. Anne Marie shared that this year fundraising purpose is to raise funds to purchase a "Language Arts Reading Program." Such a program would strongly support the new standards based reporting format. Some of the vendors vying to provide the 'Language Arts Reading Program' are: Harcourt, Open Court, and Macmillan. They will be making their company's presentations in the near future.
j. Faculty
Steve thanked the Ohana for the wonderful laptops all the teachers received. They just completed an in service training session, which was just great. He shared that all the teachers are so appreciative. Anne Marie mentioned that the teachers are very appreciative of the laptop computers that were provided partially from Ohana. She shared that all the teachers were so excited that they didn't even pay attention to the time when they were attending the in service training.
k. Administration
Anne Marie reported:
Junior Kindergarten registration is in full swing. There are currently 3 students registered. She shared that a benefit is that if the child appears unable to move forward to first grade they will move on to kindergarten. This is a plus because the child will not be listed as being retained in kindergarten.
Geographic Exception (GE) deadline is February 28, 2006.
Kiha Tirrel of the Kaneohe Rotary Club presented each third grader with a personal dictionary. Anne Marie shared that the third graders were selected because they were the grade that would benefit most from the dictionaries.
Grandparents Day was a wonderful success.
McTeacher's Night is Friday, February 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds from the drive-through are also going to Ahuimanu.
Lantern Parade and Lion Dance will be featured on campus Friday, February 17.
CPAC performances - Tuesday, February 21.
Flag Pole Assembly - Wednesday, February 22.
She encourages all families with incoming kindergartners to register very soon.
L. Communications
James cited the need to redo the website. Having a hard time keeping things up to date in the calendar section and other areas. The guest book has also been getting entries from people that are trying to advertise their products and are not relevant to the Ohana website. The abilities to write to the guest book have been turned off for the time being.
Request for Funds
Steve requested $1,115.00 for activities related to the 6th grade trip to Kauai. Robert moved and Lois seconded. The motion was approved unanimously. He also requested $170.00 for refreshments for both Physical Fitness Day and their annual Cross-Country meet. James moved and Lois seconded. Motion was approved unanimously.
New Business/Parental Concerns
Anne Marie shared that a lot of teachers were very concerned about problems facing our students in cyberspace. She suggested that a parent's only workshop be held to inform parents about the dangers facing our youngsters. Workshop to be held sometime in May.
Adjournment/Next Meeting
The next official meeting is Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at 6 p.m. in the library. The meeting was adjourned at 8:11 p.m.
