AHUIMANU OHANA BOARD MEETING MINUTES
May 11th, 2004

Present
Lee Hopkinson, Yvonne Turro, Robert Maeshiro, James Garrett, Kahea Souza, Wayne Iseri, Dawn Ching, Kendra Sevigny, Leighton Sakamoto, Valzey Freitas, David Lau, Brian Ferguson, Shawn Gillin, Julie Aoyagi, Randall Tam.

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:14 p.m.

Approval of Minutes
The April 20, 2004 minutes was distributed for review. Dawn moved and Kahea seconded that the minutes be approved. Motion was unanimously approved.

Treasurer’s Report
April 2004 report was distributed and reviewed by Wayne (see attached). It was moved by Yvonne and seconded by Kahea that the treasurer's report be approved. Motion was unanimously approved.

President’s Report
Lee mentioned the passing of Bob Lockyer's father. It was moved by Brian and seconded by David that a gift be presented to the family. Formal introductions were made as there were many new attendees. Lee requested that Yvonne begin the Ohana election formalities.

Vice President’s Report
Yvonne announced the candidates nominated. Lee questioned if there were any opposition to the nominated candidates. Since there were none, Yvonne announced the new Ohana board members:

Valzey Freitas- President
Yvonne Turro- Vice-President
Robert Maeshiro- Recording Secretary
Julie Aoyagi - Treasurer.
James Garrett volunteered again to head communications.
She also announced the filling of other non-elected positions:
Ann-Marie Duca - student council chair
Angie Pahia - Fun Fair Chairperson
Kahea Souza to head the Fall & Spring fundraisers.
It was reported that David Lau will be leaving the board at the end of the year. Brian moved and Dawn seconded that the new officers be approved. The motion was approved unanimously.

Yvonne reported on fundraiser meeting that both she and Lee attended at the Treetops Restaurant. She mentioned the impressive entertainment book program. Lee mentioned that a school could also be credited for entertainment books sold out of state.

Committee Reports:

a. Shirts
a. Shirts - Yvonne distributed entries for the school's t-shirt contest. Ohana members were very impressed with both the numerous student entries and the quality of the designs. Randall Tam presented his company's program for producing t-shirts. The board narrowed selection to two designs involving ideas being expressed in the student's designs. Yvonne to approach Randall to print up each design on purple shirts so board can make a final decision.


b. SCBM
Brian discussed 20th Century Grant and SID - school improvement plan. Looking for more parent involvement in SCBM.


c. Workshop
Valzey shared that a Resiliency workshop can be held some time next year. She also presented a possible Buck for Books fundraiser if Wog-A -Thon effort needed more support.


d. Membership
None.


e. Student Council
e. Student Council - Leighton announced that student council elections are currently underway. Spring Scholastic Book Fair held from March 1 through 5 raised xx.xx. Hats off to Reading Day was held March 3rd. Flag Pole Assembly and green, purple, and gold day was on March 17th. Money for Math drive was from April 12 to 29th. Earth Day activities took place on April 22.


f. PCNC
Lee announced that Valzey was selected as the new PCNC out of a field of eight (8) outstanding candidates. Outgoing PCNC - Paressa thanks everyone for a wonderful working year.


g. Fun Fair
Angie Pahia had volunteered to be Fun Fair Chairperson.


h. Fall Fundraiser
h. Fall 2004 Fundraiser - Donna from World's Finest Candies did a fundraiser presentation. She shared the innovative highlights of her company's many fundraising programs. She ended her presentation with a generous gift to the library of a new Great World Atlas. Lee mentioned that there will be five (5) additional vendors scheduled to make their fundraiser presentation at the next Ohana meeting. Lee also shared the importance of assigning a purpose to fundraisers. This promotes more participation due to parents knowing what the funds will be used for.


i. Spring Fund Raiser
i. Spring 2004 Fundraiser - Kahea displayed the wog-a-thon t-shirt she designed with the help of Bob Lockyer. She also showed frizbees with Ahuimanu School logo that will be used as prizes. To date more than xx.xx has been raised. Monies are still coming in. Kahea shared how everyone had a very fun time that day. Lee recognized Kahea for stepping up to the occasion and doing a great job.


j. Playground
David reported that "96744" church group weed wacked the playground area. There are 4 tether ball poles purchased last year that still needs to be set up. He contacted the eagle scout candidate. The candidate plans to install all 4 poles in June as his project. David announced that there is also another eagle scout candidate looking for possible projects.


k. Faculty
k. Faculty - Leighton announced that May Day rehearsals are in full swing. Teachers are also busy with post test reading assessments and planning for Parent Sub Day event.


l. Administration
l. Administration - Leighton represented administration due to Bob Lockyer's absence. Yvonne presented concerns about a news article on Harcourt's error on state's examinations. He said he didn't know what to make of the article either way. Wayne mentioned that the state has been dealing with this company for many years. Lee shared that it is good though to be aware of the situation.

m. Communications
James will be posting pictures of the wog-a-thon on the web page. He currently gearing up to photograph a very eventful May Day program. Lee mentioned that our web site was used in a very interesting way. A mainland job applicant emailed her resume to Lee via the web site to be distributed locally. She is very interested in relocating to Hawaii to teach. James mentioned that many graduates of Ahuimanu Elementary School are visiting our web site. They are constantly leaving messages that the web site is very enjoyable.


Request for Funds
None.

New Business/Parent Concerns
Dawn raised concern about children using unacceptable language on campus and has spoken to the school administration. She feels there should be some type of profanity policy in place to prevent the younger children from being exposed to such foul language.

Adjournment/Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the library.

The meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
