'Ohana Meeting October 21st, 2003

Present:
Anne Marie Duca, Lee Hopkinson, Wayne Iseri, Leighton Sakamoto, Gisella Souza (Kahea), Nancy Monroe, David Lau, Bryan Ferguson, James Garrett, Kendra Sevigny, and Valzey Freitas

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. Sushi and Aloha Maid drinks for refreshments.
 
Approval of Minutes:
The minutes of the Septembert 2003 was reviewed with corrections made to Pennies for Playground reference. Motion was unanimously carried.
 
Treasurer’s Report:
October report and playground budget dicussed. Shirt account includes the 'Ohana membership fees.
 
President’s Report:
Fun Fair very successful with more details later. Will set date to review Fun Fair and discuss improvements and ideas.

Review of 'Ohana membership and the rewards for classes that achieve 100% membership. Possibly lower to 75%.
 
Mrs. Marshall submited a lettter about setting up a 3500.00 web based library system produced by the Follet company. This is the link to product
 
 
Committee Reports:
a. Shirt - Outstanding order has been filled but at a higher price. Looking for shirt suppliers and have tabled furthur discussions about a new shirt design and getting students involved.
 
b. SCBM - David Lau reports on the last meeting that included the Student Council. Minutes were circulated and upcoming school building inspection discussed with volunteers form the 'Ohana to participate. Nov 14th set as date to conduct inspection.

Traffic issue of turning right onto Hui Aeko raised with Mrs. Duca explaining past issues that dealt with trafic patterns in this area.
 
c. Workshop, Kendra - Planning for a Celebration workshop discussed with date of Dec 5th decided at 6-8pm in school cafeteria. Parent involvement of decorating cookies, garland, cards, and ornaments. Budget for Fall Festival moved to Dec for use to cover costs. Help needed to setup/breakdown and monitor activities.

Valzey Freitas reported on Drug Awareness Parenting is Prevention workshop. Worked with Mrs Duca and CSS to help organize. Held during Red Ribbon/Spirit Week in the Ahuimanu Library 6-8pm. Recruitin g guest spekers from community to deal with adolesent drug abuse and peer pressure. Emphasis to bring parents and children to deal with issues together. Money for workshop covered by grants but motion for the 'Ohana to cover child care costs of 100.00. All approve.

 
d. Membership - No report
 
e. Student Council - Mrs Duca spoke about Red Ribbon / School Spirit week. Wacky inside out backwards day, wearing red on wednesday, and tacky tourist day.
 
f. PCNC - Mrs Duca reported about coordinating parent sub day by paressa Wong. Looking to set Jan 21st as another Staff Development day with same guest speaker as the last Staff Development Day.
 
g. Fun Fair - Small report at the beginning of meeting by Lee with more discussion tabled for next meeting.
 
h. Fall Fundraiser - Kahea and Bryan give overview on progress and show flyers and incentives. Collection envelopes and progress of reminders shown with particular attention given to the choice of yellow paper used for the flyers.
 
i. Spring Fund Raiser - No report but Wayne shows finger balancing frisbees as possible prize incentive for the next WogaThon.

 
j. Playground - David Lau. Tether poles installation could be a Boy Scout project. David Lau would be technical advisor. More campus improvement projects available. Playground fence falling down and needs to be repaired or replaced.
 
k. Faculty - Mr. Sakamoto. Fun Fair very successful with much appreciation for the 'Ohana.
 
l. Administration - Anne Marie Duca
  • One outcome of recent workshop is more focus on writing creatively. Bringing more voice out of writing. Mrs Duca read a colorful invitation from the sixth graders for her to join them at the dunking booth during the Fun Fair. Colleen Meyer visited and spoke about the life of being a Legislature and also spoke about bills that affect children.

  • The recent candiate for the Music teacher position recieved an offer for another job. Still looking for a music teacher.

  • SCBM next week. SAT/HAP scores.

  • Along with school building inspections, fire inspections are also being conducted. Recent dicoveries of alarms that did not work and improvements are being made in order to pass.

  •  
    m. Communications - James. Meeting minutes placed in new section of website. CD of scanned pictures made and given to each of the grade levels so that the children and faculty can see Fun Fair photos. Experimenting with what's invloved in creating CD's with pictures and some discussion of possibly selling the CD's in the future took place.

    Request for Funds:
    * Wayne has requests from Mae Kishimoto for more computers and networking equipment. Mrs. Duca explains that the school needs to submit a technology proposal in the near future.

    New Business/Parent Concerns:
    * Nancy Monroe mentioned timing of the fall fundraiser and discussion about how the timing was determined was explained.

    Adjournment/Next Meeting:
    The next meeting will be held Wednesday Nov 12th, 2003 at 6 p.m. in the school library.
    The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
