'Ohana Meeting September 9, 2003
Present:
Anne Marie Duca, James Garrett, Lee Hopkinson, Wayne Iseri , Linda Kinoshita, Leighton Sakamoto, Gisella Souza (Kahea), Robbie Ray Tongg with his daughter, with a guest appearance by Ailym Lum.
New Parents: Kendra Sevigny and Deseree Maldonado
Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 6:19 p.m.
Approval of Minutes:
It was moved by Wayne and seconded by Leighton that the minutes of the August 2003 meeting be approved. Motion was unanimously carried.
Treasurer’s Report:
Money used for Library Books and the Fitness Center. Statements and Balances moved by Kahea and seconded by James.
President’s Report:
Thank you notes circulated from the teachers to the ‘Ohana for the stipends received at Open House.
Open House report by Lee with suggestion to review the distribution process of the stipends to teachers during Open House. Discussion of adding minutes of the ‘Ohana meetings online with board approval and an overall objection to placing balances and budget online.
Question about Pennies from Heaven going to another project with Mrs. Duca suggesting to keep it as is for now. Considering using funding form Pennies or WogAThon to go towards computers and technology purchase.
Lee attended Fun Fair meeting with Mrs.Lum and reports with amazement at the behind the scenes work taking place and acknowledges her work, which is her 10 th year doing the Fun Fair. Scripts were printed, at a discount, this year at HonBlue.
Committee Reports:
a. Shirts - 2 orders have been placed. New shirts possible next year and may consider a new design. Mrs. Duca gave a brief history of the current t-shirt design.
b. SCBM - Bryan Furgeson reported on SCBM meeting, last years business, no child left behind and selected officers. Bryan Furgeson was elected as SCBM Chairperson.
c. Workshop - No report but at end of meeting new parent Kendra Sevigny volunteered to fill the Workshop Chair position.
d. Membership - Monies have been collected by Paressa but not yet tallied.
e. Student Council - No report.
f. PCNC - Mrs Duca reported about Senior Partnerships and that Paressa Wong attended PCNC training and is considering recruiting parents as sub-teachers.
g. Fun Fair - Robbie Ray Tongg comments on the way the Fun Fair committee is being run and it’s efficiency. Mrs. Duca displayed her contribution to the auction, a hand knitted scarf. Ailyn Lum reported that the games and booths were setup. This years scripts, which are usually printed free, had to be paid for. Carol Chang from Midweek called for interviews with Mrs. Duca and Ailyn Lum about the Fun Fair and it’s history.
h. Fall Fundraiser - Kahea/Bryan. Distribution dates have changed to give more time to gather and process orders. Presentations are planned teachers and students to get them revved up for the fundraiser. Kahea is looking for 5 people to help with distribution. New parent Kendra and Robbie Ray volunteer for distribution.
i. Spring Fund Raiser - No report.
j. Playground - No report.
k. Faculty - Mr. Sakamoto, Linda. Parent conferences sent out. Math workshops coming up soon. Open House was a big success and exciting for faculty, parents, and students. An additional PTT has been found for Kindergarten.
l. Administration - Anne Marie Duca
* Roof replacement on C Building completed. A portable is also leaking and will be repaired.
* The new kiln building has been finished and the kiln hasbeen moved from the workroom. Kahaluu Loins Club did the work on the building and were featured in the Kolea.
* Personnel: A PTT has been found for the 6 th grade who is a parent and we may have a music PTT.
* Parent Workshops are beginning with School Spirit week Oct 29 with the schools 30 th anniversary celebration planned. Workshop topics will cover talking to children about drugs, violence, motivating children and a science center.
* 6 th graders will compete in track and volleyball at King competition.
* April 30 th possible date for WogAThon.
* New rules about check signing have been implemented by the DOE and Mrs. Duca will have to be removed from signing checks.
* Activity at the New Park during the evening is not drug related. More cars a parking near the park is just an indication that more people are using the new courts.
m. Communications – James. Conversion of previous website to new design almost complete. Considering using the monthly email reminders to include more information, reminders, dates, and links to meeting minutes and other school/’Ohana news.
New Business/Parent Concerns:
*Open positions available and Kendra Sevigny volunteers to fill the workshops position and Robbie Ray Tonng acceptsa position as Member at Large.
Adjournment/Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be held on October 21, 2003 at 6 p.m. in the school library.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
